But what became clearer this year is that scarcity alone no longer guarantees reverence. Plenty of bottles were hard to find and… just fine. Others were overlooked because they weren’t rare enough to brag about.
Scarcity is a tool. Sometimes it protects quality. Sometimes it protects margins. And sometimes it just protects a story that’s been told so many times it feels true by default.
Understanding the difference matters.
This is still uncomfortable for some people, but it remains true:
Secondary prices don’t create value. They reveal it.
Ignoring them doesn’t make the market fairer—it just makes you less informed.
The secondary market tells you:
• What people actually want
• What demand looks like when marketing is stripped away
• Where hype has momentum—and where it’s fading
That doesn’t mean you should pay secondary. It means you should understand it. Knowledge is leverage, whether you choose to use it or not.
Bourbon didn’t teach us to chase prices this year. It reminded us that pretending they don’t exist helps no one.
Some of the most enjoyable pours this year didn’t come with countdown clocks, lottery entries, or Instagram fanfare. They were bottles you could find—sometimes easily—because they weren’t built to be trophies.
Meanwhile, some of the loudest releases delivered exactly what hype often delivers: excitement upfront and questions later.
This isn’t a new lesson, but it’s one worth repeating. Bourbon rewards curiosity more than conformity. If your shelf only reflects what the internet told you to want, you’re probably missing out on some excellent whiskey.
For all the talk of rankings, ratings, and “consensus bottles,” taste continues to be stubbornly personal.
This year reinforced that:
• Proof preferences vary wildly
• Age statements don’t guarantee balance
• Your favorite pour doesn’t need permission
The best bourbon isn’t universal—it’s contextual. It depends on mood, moment, and memory. No app, chart, or expert can replace that. What tools can do is help you navigate the landscape with fewer blind spots.
Not every expectation held up this year.
Some bottles surprised us—in good ways and bad. Some trends we thought would cool off didn’t. Others faded quietly without anyone announcing their departure.
That’s part of paying attention. Bourbon isn’t static, and neither are opinions. If you’re not changing your mind occasionally, you’re probably not learning anything new.
As the calendar flips, the fundamentals haven’t changed:
• Drink what you enjoy
• Know what you’re paying for
• Don’t confuse collecting with enjoying
• And remember that bourbon is meant to be opened, not just admired
Being whiskey-wise isn’t about owning everything. It’s about understanding what’s in front of you—price, proof, story, and substance included.
